At Wesley, we believe that character instruction is an
essential step for the development of Chinese literacy. Unlike other languages,
the smallest meaningful unit of written Chinese starts from characters. Multiple
characters form a word. Multiple words form a phrase and so on. Therefore studying
how the individual stroke (e.g. stroke types and orders) to form characters in
written Chinese is the fundamental first step for the development of Chinese literacy
and the use of other strategies (e.g. radicals and other underlying rules ) will also be introduced to
help students systematically and effectively increase their literacy level in Chinese
characters.
The 500 Wesley Characters List is divided by grade level and used
as guidance for teachers and students to gain a comprehensive understanding of
the expected learning sequence and scope in their Chinese literacy development.A Weebly study site is created for the review and reinforcement to ensure the success
of the on-going process of literacy development.
